The first ever football game in history was played in Britain nearly 150 years ago, and since then it has grown to become the most popular sport in the country – if not the world! Football is part of British culture, as much as the Queen, afternoon tea or a red double-decker bus.
If you get the chance, visit a local stadium to really experience the exhilarating atmosphere of the roaring crowd. Alternatively, if you can't get a ticket, pubs are always great places to watch a match, enjoy a drink or a tasty meal and join the locals in cheering on the team.
Britain isn't only about football. We have a long and diverse sporting history, and friendly matches, games, athletic competitions and meetings – of every sporting persuasion – are held throughout the year.
And of course we have numerous world-class sporting venues regularly hosting crucial international games and sporting events. Make sure you take time out to see an event during your visit and discover the famous British 'sportsmanship'.
