Houses of Parliament Summer Opening
Every year, from the end of July to the end of September, London's Houses of Parliament open to the public for tours. The tours take place in the summer recesses, when Parliament does not sit and Members work away from Westminster. The 2008 tours will take place from 28 July - 27 September.
The Houses of Parliament are home to the House of Lords, the House of Commons and many other great State rooms. The layout of the building is complex, with nearly 1,200 rooms, 100 staircases and well over 2 miles (3 km) of passageways.
Walk in the footsteps of royalty (you'll be taken on the route the Queen takes during the State Opening of Parliament) and some of the world's greatest historical figures through one of London's most famous buildings.
The 75-minute tour is given by a Blue Badge Guide, who will take you around the Royal robing room, Chambers of the House of Lords and House of Commons, Central Lobby and St Stephen's Chapel. The tour ends in the historic Westminster Hall.
Tours run from Monday to Saturday inclusive, but not on Sunday or Bank Holidays. Tours in French, Spanish, Italian and German are offered at set times throughout the summer.
Tickets cost £12 adults, £30 family tickets (maximum 2 adults), £8 students/OAPs, £5 children (5-15 years), under 5's go free. Pushchairs are allowed, but will not fit into some areas. Note: This tour is not recommended for young children, as there is a lot of walking.
Because of the number of visitors taking the tour, you're advised to book tickets in advance by calling +44 (0)870 906 3773 or visiting Keith Prowse Ticketing (www.keithprowse.com/tickets/slink.buy/e.B90/Summer_Opening_of_Parliament--Houses_of_Parliament--London.html).
Tickets are available on the day from the Ticket Office located next to the Jewel Tower in Old Palace Yard (opposite the Houses of Parliament).
Note: Tours may be cancelled at any time if Parliament has to meet (e.g. in an emergency).
